How To Get Rid Of Blackheads

(Hint: you can throw away the pore strips!)

Most of us have at some point placed a blackhead removing strip across our nose, or smothered it in a thick black tar-like goo under the impression that in 30 minutes we'll peel them back to reveal our blackheads have departed forever. But alas, just a few days later they're back to looking just the way they always have.To understand why that is and how to get rid of them FOREVER we need to first understand how it is that they come about:

What ACTUALLY causes blackheads?

Blackheads are not caused by dirt.  The skin (specifically the sebaceous glands) produces sebum (oil) and usually this gets steadily deposited on to the surface of the skin to keep it hydrated and nourished. BUT the production of sebum is sometimes forced in to overdrive which leads to an oversupply, which subsequently combines with dead skin cells and gets stuck in the pores.

So why is it black? "When this trapped sebum in your pores is open to the air, it oxidizes and the surface turns black" says Dr Sakar, a Board-Certified Dermatologist. In fact, when you squeeze out a blackhead you'll often notice that only the top of it, the part exposed to the air, is black.

This is why no matter how often you squeeze them out and pristinely clean your face, they just keep coming back again and again and will continue to do so until you treat the root cause.

So how do I get rid of blackheads?

It's imperative that you take a two step approach, that crushes blackheads from both the inside and the outside. Don't overcomplicate things and keep it simple, we recommend this 2 step process:

1. Treat them from within.
Doing this is actually easier than it sounds thanks to The AAC supplement; "the AAC supplement is utilising natural ingredients to usher in an exciting new era in skincare management" says Dr Anna Chacon, another Board Certified Dermatologist. It quite simply stops blackheads from continuing to appear by tackling the root cause from within, most importantly this means that once they've been cleared they will stop coming back...  thus stopping the never ending cycle of pore strips.

Just don't expect a quick fix - you've probably had blackheads for many years and so you need to expect the process of finally clearing them to take 2-3 months. But once they have cleared the best thing is they won't be coming back again. The added bonus is you'll also notice general improvements in your skin, too.

2. Use products that increase cell turnover.
"Use ingredients that cause cell turnover so you're less likely to get dead skin cells clogging your pores, such as salicylic acid and other vitamin A derivatives" says Dr Sakar.

But don't get carried away; it can be temping to employ the mantra that "more is better" when it comes to your skin, but that's not the case when it comes to cell turnover. You need to listen to your skin; if it feels delicate after using such products then give it a few days to recover. It can be tempting to hate on your skin when it's not doing what you want it to do, but remember that your skin is your friend not your foe, so show it love.

Throw away the pore strips!

Now you know why those pore strips never really seem to work, though we can't deny that they can be rather satisfying!
